What is BS 7176 ?

Understanding the BS 7176 Standard

 
BS 7176 is the UK's highest guidance standard for the fire performance of non-domestic seating. Unlike a single test, it categorizes flame-retardant requirements into four grades based on the fire risk of the usage location.

Only materials certified to BS 7176 are permitted in public spaces such as hotels, casinos, hospitals, and government buildings within the UK and Commonwealth countries.

Test Method & Process

Step 1: The Setup
A standard wood crib (Source 5) is positioned on the test rig

Step 2: Ignition
Alcohol is added and the crib is ignited to simulate a high-intensity flame.

Step 3: Resistance

The Faux leather is exposed to the flame. It must self-extinguish within 10 minutes.

Step 4: Evaluation
Pass Criteria: No smoldering, no flaming through, and structural integrity maintained.
