BS 5852 Source 0 & 1 are the mandatory fire safety benchmarks for residential furniture in the UK, required by the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988. 
 
Source 0 (Cigarette Test): 
Resists ignition from a smouldering cigarette.

Source 1 (Match Test): 
Withstands a simulated naked flame equivalent to a match.

Test Method & Process

Step 1: 

The Setup

 
Action: Leather samples are conditioned and mounted on a standard test rig at a 90° angle.

Detail: Simulating the tension and geometry of a finished furniture piece.

Source 0 Challenge
 
Action: A smouldering ignition source (cigarette) is placed in the rig's crevice.

Detail: Zero progressive smouldering or flaming allowed during the 60-minute observation window.

Step 3: 

Source 1 Challenge

   
Action: A standardized butane flame is applied to the junction for 20 seconds.

Detail: The material must self-extinguish within 120 seconds after flame removal.

Result Verification

 
Action: Comprehensive external and internal inspection.

Detail: Certified PASS only if no escalating combustion or extensive internal damage occurs.
