The EN71-2 standard is a critical part of the European Union Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC). It specifies the categories of flammable materials that are prohibited in all toys and details requirements concerning flammability on certain toys when they are subjected to a small source of ignition.
For artificial leather used in soft toys, costumes, play tents, and children's furniture, this standard measures the rate of spread of flame. To ensure a child's safety, the material must either not ignite or burn at a slow enough rate to allow the child to drop the toy or distance themselves from the hazard.
Samples are conditioned for at least 7 hours at a temperature of 20±5°C and a relative humidity of 65±5% to simulate real-world usage and ensure consistent data.
Step 2:
Ignition Source
A standardized flame (simulating a match or candle) is applied to the textured surface of the leather for a specific duration (e.g., 3 seconds) under controlled laboratory conditions.
Step 3:
Flame Spread Measurement
If ignition occurs, calibrated sensors and timers measure how fast the flame travels across the test distance. The focus is on the "Rate of Spread of Flame.
Step 4:
Final Assessment
The sample is classified as PASS if the flame extinguishes itself or if the spread rate is significantly below the 30 mm/s threshold defined by the directive.
Safety goes beyond flame retardancy. Caiwing Leather formulations meet fire safety requirements while strictly complying with EN71-3 and REACH regulations. Free from phthalates, heavy metals, and azo dyes, with no irritating odors, they ensure chemical safety for infants and toddlers during chewing or close contact.
Superior Flammability Performance
Strictly adhering to the EU Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC), Caiwing Leather has passed the rigorous EN71-2 combustion rate test. When exposed to specific ignition sources, the material exhibits an extremely low flame spread rate (well below the standard's 30mm/s limit) or possesses self-extinguishing properties upon removal from the flame, providing maximum safety assurance for children in accidental situations.
Soft Touch & Easy Maintenance
Featuring micro-porous faux leather technology, it delivers a touch as delicate and soft as a baby's skin, elevating the premium feel of end products. Additionally, the surface incorporates a stain-resistant, easy-clean coating that effortlessly wipes away everyday dirt and grime. Optional antimicrobial and mold-resistant features provide comprehensive protection for children's health.
Engineered for High-Traffic Play
To address the high-frequency use and wear inherent in children's products, we have optimized the physical and mechanical properties of the leather. The product exhibits exceptional tear resistance, flex endurance, and peel strength, maintaining surface integrity even under prolonged pulling, stepping, or friction. This prevents secondary risks associated with exposed internal fillings.
