What is EN71-2 ?

Understanding the EN71-2 Flammability Standard

The EN71-2 standard is a critical part of the European Union Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC). It specifies the categories of flammable materials that are prohibited in all toys and details requirements concerning flammability on certain toys when they are subjected to a small source of ignition.

For artificial leather used in soft toys, costumes, play tents, and children's furniture, this standard measures the rate of spread of flame. To ensure a child's safety, the material must either not ignite or burn at a slow enough rate to allow the child to drop the toy or distance themselves from the hazard.

Test Method & Process

Step 1:

Sample Conditioning

Samples are conditioned for at least 7 hours at a temperature of 20±5°C and a relative humidity of 65±5% to simulate real-world usage and ensure consistent data.

Step 2:

Ignition Source

A standardized flame (simulating a match or candle) is applied to the textured surface of the leather for a specific duration (e.g., 3 seconds) under controlled laboratory conditions.

Step 3:

Flame Spread Measurement

If ignition occurs, calibrated sensors and timers measure how fast the flame travels across the test distance. The focus is on the "Rate of Spread of Flame.

Step 4:

Final Assessment

The sample is classified as PASS if the flame extinguishes itself or if the spread rate is significantly below the 30 mm/s threshold defined by the directive.
